Top tips for driving safely during Ramadan

Motorists in the UAE are being urged to show extra consideration to other drivers during Ramadan, as driving levels are likely to be affected by changes to eating and sleeping patterns. Experts have warned that fatigue caused by these changes could lead to accidents on the roads.

The National has reported that just before sunset, in particular, is one of the times when motorists need to take the most care. Drivers rushing to make iftar appointments can lead to reckless driving and accidents. Older motorists, especially males aged 40 and above, have been found to be the most vulnerable during this period.

A study by the Road Safety UAE portal, which highlights the challenges of staying safe on the roads during the holy month, will be released next week. The study is based on data collated from auto-insurance claims from more than 6,000 accidents that took place during Ramadan.

Thomas Edelmann, managing director of Road Safety UAE, has urged motorists to give themselves extra time when travelling during this period, as well as to show extra consideration to others. Edelmann has warned that dehydration and low blood sugar, caused by fasting, can affect drivers’ attentiveness, concentration, vision and reaction time.

The Ramadan-specific lifestyle, which involves fasting and irregular sleeping and meal timings, can cause fatigue, exhaustion, impatience and distraction, leading to early morning accidents.

The study also found that Tuesdays were the most likely day for an accident during Ramadan, while Sundays were the least likely.

“Good time management is crucial, and motorists are urged to leave early enough and allow for a time buffer to reach their destination on time,” said Edelmann. He added that even if motorists arrived late for a Ramadan event, people would understand.

Ramadan is a very special time and it is all about being with the ones close to you, which creates a lot of traffic.

It is sad to witness hundreds of accidents and dozens of fatalities every year during the holy month of Ramadan.

Experts have warned that accidents are rarely caused by just one factor and that the compensations for reacting in time are reduced during Ramadan. Motorists are being advised to drive less aggressively and assertively during this period.
